EU EcoDesign Regulation 2019/1781: new motor efficiency requirements
Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 of 1st October 2019 lays down EcoDesign requirements for electric motors and variable speed drives pursuant to Directive 2009/125/EC of the European Parliament and Council, amending Regulation (EC) No 640/2009.
Published by the European Commission on 1st Oct 2019, the new EcoDesign Regulation is implemented in two steps, on 1st of July 2021 and 1st of July 2023. Both steps set up more demanding requirements in motors efficiency, both extending the Regulation scope to new motor ranges and ceasing the IE2 minimum efficiency with variable speed drive (VSD) option.
The first step introduced into all EU Countries the following new requirements from 01.07.2021:
- IE3 minimum efficiency for motors from 0.75 to 1000 kW
- IE2 minimum efficiency for motors from 0.12 to 0.55 kW
The regulation scope includes three-phase single speed motors, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 50/60 Hz, 2, 4, 6, 8 poles, rated on continuous duty operation (S1, S3>80%, S6>80%), brake motors, TEFC and TEAO design, Ex motors (excluded Ex eb).
The second step introduced into all EU Countries the following new requirements from 01.07.2023:
- IE4 minimum efficiency for motors from 75 to 200 kW – 2, 4, 6 poles
- IE2 minimum efficiency for motors from 0.12 to 1000 kW – Ex eb motors and single-phase motors
